AI Website vs. Custom Code: Why "Cheap" Ends Up Costing You a Fortune
Hey, I'm Matthias Bigl from bigls.net. Today, let's talk straight – completely without the marketing fluff.
I often hear the same question from companies:
"Matthias, why do I need you as a web developer when I can just click together a website using ChatGPT or an AI builder in 60 seconds?"
Sure, that works. Click, prompt, boom – site is online. Costs almost nothing. But here is the uncomfortable truth: Cheap is often the most expensive route you can take in web design.
The AI Illusion and Lost Revenue
If you ask an AI to build you a website, you get exactly what it was trained on: the absolute most average, soulless cookie-cutter mush of the internet. A study by Amazon impressively showed that 50 percent of English texts on the web are already hastily generated, low-quality AI content without any deeper value.[^1]
The massive problem with this? A sterile AI site builds exactly zero trust. People make emotional decisions and buy from companies that appear authentic and radiate security. If a potential customer lands on your 10-euro AI website, doesn't take it seriously, and immediately clicks over to the competition, that is pure lost revenue.
Every lost lead that bounces due to poor loading times, generic texts, or unprofessional design costs you cold hard cash. Suddenly, this supposedly "cheap" AI solution has cost you thousands of euros in lost orders.
Code Was Never the Bottleneck
Let's share an open secret: Writing code has never been the bottleneck in web development. Today, ChatGPT spits out a flawless HTML template for you in three seconds. But you know what? Code alone doesn't sell.
The true core of my work? Sales psychology.
In the first step, it's not about technology at all, but about understanding you. Who are you? What drives you? What do you really want to achieve, and how can I represent your brand online exactly so that it hits the bullseye with your target audience?
An AI might be able to explain to a visitor what you do technically, but it doesn't understand your "why." I translate your personality into a psychologically sound user experience. I specifically implement proven psychological triggers like social proof or positioning as an authority. These tactics do not put the user under pressure, but logically guide them to the next step – turning passive visitors into paying customers.
AI Is a Tool, Not a Replacement (My SDLC Reality)
Don't get me wrong: I love Artificial Intelligence. The current models and tools are incredibly good by now. I intensively use AI myself in my own Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) – whether through AI-supported workflow tools that automate my administrative processes[^2], or through code copilots that massively boost my productivity as a developer.[^3]
But this is exactly the crux of the matter: AI is an absolutely powerful tool, but it never replaces the fundamental strategy, the genuine understanding of the target audience[^1], or a well-thought-out sales channel.[^4] It is your assistant, not your replacement.
The bigls.net Way: Real Craftsmanship Instead of Prompts
As a real dev, I don't just prompt around a bit. I build you a high-performance, tailor-made web application perfectly aligned with your processes. My goal for SMEs in Vienna and Lower Austria: Agency quality without agency prices.
Need an example? Check out my "Grading Bot" project. This is not a simple digital business card, but a complex EdTech system that evaluates code submissions from students in five different programming languages live in under 30 seconds. The whole thing runs securely isolated in a Docker sandbox and is seamlessly integrated into Azure AD and MS Teams.
Try getting an AI to set up such a highly complex, secure backend architecture flawlessly for you, while simultaneously communicating your corporate values in a psychologically clever way. Spoiler: It will be an expensive disaster.
Conclusion
AI is the best tool we developers have ever had. But when it comes to applying sales psychology, turning visitors into paying customers, delivering blazing-fast performance, and showing real personality, you need a professional.
Don't save at the wrong end. Let's rather grab a good coffee (instead of having an anonymous video call) and talk about how we can build your digital presence so that it truly generates revenue.
